GU is simple. Simple is fast.

Simple to take, simple to digest, GU Energy Gel provides just what you need for premium exercise fuel and none of the extras that slow you down. GU takes you where you want to go, fast.

Energize, Sustain, RecoverGU's formula for success.

Launched in 1991, the worlds first energy gel is still the most efficient sports fuel available today. GUs patented carbohydrate blend delivers high-quality, easily-digested and long-lasting energy for athletes in every sport and at all levels. Our Berkeley-based sports nutrition company started with original GU Energy Gel, a revolutionary and more effective method to keep athletes fueled during exercise and speed their recovery from exertion. Today thousands of elite athletes and millions of endurance enthusiasts around the world agree: GU works.

A shot of fast-acting natural fructose (fruit sugar) goes straight to work building your energy levels back up while the maltodextrin is quickly absorbed and sent to your muscles. Vital electrolytes keep your blood chemistry in line and hydration levels stable. Calcium keeps your muscles humming and caffeine adds an extra kick to your power.

Complex carbs in the form of maltodextrin (70-80% of the complex/simple carbohydrates blend) help you maintain glucose levels over time. Citrates (potassium citrate, sodium citrate and citric acid) help speed the conversion of these carbs into energy molecules and mitigate performance-sapping acid build-up in muscles. Branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) leucine, valine and isoleucine, serve as another fuel source, aid in recovery and can improve mental performance and reduce fatigue by limiting the central nervous systems production of serotonin. Histidine, an essential amino acid, acts alongside the citrates as a buffer that helps neutralize lactic acid build-up in muscles.

Antioxidant vitamins C & E defend muscles from assault by free radicals. Chamomile works as an anti-inflammatory during and after exercise. Ginger soothes the stomach. Sea salt supplies a host of minerals.

Both GU Energy Gel and our new Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Gel pack 100 calories into every packet. 100 calories is an ideal serving size to suck down 15 minutes before training or racing in order to top off your electrolyte and glucose stores, followed by one every 30-45 minutes along the way, washed down with a few sips of fluid.

For optimum results, always drink at least 24-30 ounces of fluid per hour during training and racing.

Exact GU intake depends on the intensity of your pursuit and your body weight and fitness level. The fitter you are and the more efficient your metabolism, the more GU you can eat each hour, up to approximately 340 calories every 60 minutes.

Combine GU with Roctane Ultra Endurance Gel, GU Electrolyte Brew and GU Recovery Brew for the ultimate in sports hydration, fueling and recovery. Take one gel 15 minutes before training or competition and then one gel every 30-45 minutes during exercise. Drink Electrolyte Brew throughout your training or racing.

Gu Peanut Butter Flavor
Monique Winkler (Mill Valley, CA) 9/27/2012 9:46 AM
I am not a gel fan. I usually find the texture really difficult to swallow and the taste way too sweet. I finally found a flavor that works. Compared to the other Gu flavors, Peanut Butter is much less sweet - it actually tastes a bit like peanut butter! The texture is not great, but the taste make them acceptable.

Can't go wrong with GU. I suggest trying out the different flavors before you buy a box. I like the vanilla and the extra caffeine is a must for me. I tried the GU Chomps before but didn't like having to chew. The gels go down easy and I just need a squirt of water. I recommend these for anyone exercising longer than an hour.
Best Energy Gel

GU Energy is the original maker of energy gel. These are the only gel I can tolerate without water. My favorite flavors are Tri-Berry and Mandarin Orange. I use them 15 minutes before a race and again every 45 minutes. Don't waste your time on the other gels. Get these and you won't be disappointed.
GU Energy Gel

I find energy gels vary widely in taste and palatability - in general, I find GU gels to be the easiest to take in and digest during long and/or intense workouts. I think the GU flavors are very hit and miss - personally, I like the chocolate best, but don't always use it because it's not bure carbohydrate like the other flavors (chocolate and chocolate mint have some fat in them). Chocolate would be perfect if GU would eliminate the fat content. If you're into fruit flavors, I'd recommend Jet Blackberry and Tri-Berry. Lime is ok, pretty strong flavor. Avoid Mandarin Orange and especially Strawberry Vanilla, that's the worst of the collection. In addition, I think the Unflavored version is underrated - very easy to take in. If you like Hammer Gels, try this one. Compared to other gels: CarbBOOM and EFS are sweeter, often have an aftertaste. HammerGel is pretty good, very plain. PowerBar Gel is a train wreck. And Clif Shot - now that they've reformulated it - is much, much better. I'll continue to choose and use GU - I wish they'd sell it in a multi-serving jug container, would be easier to handle in a flask vs. ripping up a bunch of single-serve packages.
A must for my long runs
Kim Graves (San Diego, CA) 4/15/2011 8:18 AM
I've been a GU user for a few years and depend on it for a kick of energy for my longer runs (8+ miles). I've tried other brands but keep coming back to GU. It is a little thicker than others (Power Bar Gel) which I like because it won't dribble out of the pouch down my chin. My favorite flavors are Tri-Berry and Mandarin Orange. GU Chomps are another product they offer but I just have a hard time chewing and swallowing them while running. They're better as a pre-running energy boost for me. I'll certainly be depending on GU in the future.
